The Challenge
Superior Propane partners with leading engineering firms and general contractors to come up with specialized energy solutions for the most unusual or unexpected situations.
This was the case in December 2018 when engineering firm MCA Consultants approached us for help to come up with a heating solution for their project. MCA and the general contractor, FitzGerald and Snow, were building a 300,000 square foot greenhouse in Charlottetown, PEI for their large agricultural client, which specializes in producing and selling high-quality medical marijuana. Due to a sudden cold weather snap, ground frost prohibited FitzGerald and Snow from being able to pour the concrete for the greenhouse floor.
FitzGerald and Snow needed a heating solution to thaw the ground in place in less than two weeks in order to keep the project on track. Traditional construction heaters wouldn’t be able to thaw 225,000 square feet of surface area quick enough. The location also left them with few available options.
The Solution
On December 17, Superior Propane proposed a new mobile boiler solution available from one of our suppliers, Wolseley Canada Inc. The advantages of using mobile boilers are that they are hooked into the propane supply and can be deployed directly to a worksite quickly and safely.
This boiler solution provided temporary construction heat by employing the following:
- 50 hydronic air handlers that converted hot water to warm air for a total of 1.9 million BTU/hour
- 160,000 litres of propane
- One trailer
On December 21, FitzGerald and Snow agreed with the solution, and we had to move quickly to implement it without losing any time. Superior Propane’s regional operations team searched within our delivery network and located two 2900-gallon tanks in our Dartmouth, Nova Scotia facility and had them shipped to PEI within two days. Superior’s operations team was instrumental in providing the technical knowledge and guidance for specifying BTU requirements, tank sizing and building code requirements.
Now well into the holiday season and shutdown schedules, Superior called on one of our certified partners, Joe Corrigan Mechanical, to make the propane, hydronic and electrical connections to the building from the mobile boiler room in addition to running all hoses and wires. The boiler solution was hooked up and operational on Christmas Eve.
Not only did Superior oversee the logistics of commissioning this specialized solution, we worked closely with the local propane inspector to ensure the equipment and setup met all regulatory requirements. Superior partners with the construction industry’s best manufacturers, service and rental companies for our customers’ power, heat and equipment needs.
The Results
Superior Propane had the construction site up and running within eight days despite the time of year and holiday closures. FitzGerald and Snow felt that we provided a solution to their problem and executed it within what other companies would consider an unreasonable length of time.
At a typical construction site, Superior provides propane heating solutions for multiple applications to keep buildings running smoothly and efficiently even in frigid temperatures. With the construction project complete, the client began using Superior Propane for their building heat and hot water. Our scalable solutions allow us to grow as their business grows and we now have installed one 30,000-gallon tank with four vapourizers to support their 32 million BTU boiler system.
